Tooth extractions
in Waupaca
— gentle, efficient, and with a clear plan for what comes next
When a tooth cannot be saved — due to severe decay, infection, fracture, or crowding — extraction is the right call. At Crystal River Dental, we perform extractions gently, with local anesthesia and sedation available, and always with a clear discussion of your options for replacing the tooth.

Same-day urgent emergency extractions available for dental pain relief

Clinical Guidelines
When is an extraction necessary?
We always try to save a tooth first: Extraction is never our first recommendation. If a tooth can be saved with a root canal, crown, or other restorative treatment — and if saving it makes long-term clinical sense — we’ll present that option. We recommend extraction when saving the tooth is not possible, not practical, or not in your long-term best interest.
Severe decay

When decay has destroyed too much healthy tooth structure to predictably support a protective crown or filling restoration.

Dental infection

An abscess that cannot be resolved with root canal therapy, or when the patient cannot proceed with root canal due to underlying factors.

Advanced bone loss

Severe periodontal disease that has destroyed the supporting bone around a tooth, leaving it with insufficient long-term stability.

Orthodontic necessity

Removal of a strategic permanent tooth to create necessary arch space as part of a comprehensive alignment path.

Tooth Replacement Planning
What happens to the space after extraction?
“Leaving a gap where a tooth was removed has real structural consequences — neighboring teeth drift, the opposing tooth can super-erupt into the space, and bone loss begins within weeks. We discuss your replacement options at the same appointment as the extraction, so you have a clear plan before you leave.”
Dental implant

Gold standard replacement — a biocompatible titanium root placed directly into the jawbone that permanently anchors a custom crown.

Dental bridge

Fixed replacement anchored permanently to adjacent support teeth — faster than an implant and highly durable when adjacent teeth need crowns.

Partial denture

Removable prosthetic appliance — our most affordable upfront option for replacing multiple missing teeth across an arch.

Socket preservation

A specialized bone graft placed into the empty socket at the time of extraction to preserve bone volume for future implant placement.

Fast, affordable retainer services — new patients and replacement retainers welcome

Simple extraction

Performed on a tooth that is fully visible above the gum line. The tooth is gently loosened within its socket and removed without incisions. Completed in minutes under local anesthesia with minimal recovery time required.

Surgical extraction

Required for teeth broken at the gum line, partially erupted, or possessing curved root structures requiring sectioning. A small tissue incision is made to safely access and lift the tooth. Recovery is slightly longer than simple paths.

The Clinical Journey
Step-by-Step Surgical Progression

01

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered thoroughly before any instruments are used. You will feel touch pressure but no sharp pain. Nitrous oxide sedation is available.

02

Removal

The tooth is gently loosened and removed. For surgical extractions, a minor tissue incision is made and the tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces for easy removal.

03

Socket care

Sterile gauze is placed to control initial bleeding. A socket preservation bone graft is placed if pre-planned. Detailed post-operative instructions are provided.

04

Replacement planning

Replacement options are finalized before you leave — whether an implant consultation is booked or partial denture planning is initiated.

Gentle extractions — with a clear plan for what comes next

Advanced sedation options

We provide comforting oral conscious or nitrous oxide dental sedation paths for anxious patients to ensure your visit remains entirely relaxed.

Same-day urgent care

We reserve dedicated time in our weekly schedule for urgent emergency extraction patients — we understand tooth pain cannot wait.

Complete replacement mapping

We do not simply remove a tooth and send you away. Every extraction path includes a transparent discussion regarding permanent tooth replacement options.

Frequently Asked Extraction Questions
Performed under thorough local anesthesia — you will feel pressure and movements but absolutely no sharp pain. Some nominal soreness for 2–3 days afterward is normal and easily managed with standard OTC or prescribed pain relievers.

Most patients feel significantly better within 48 to 72 hours. We recommend a soft food diet for 3 to 5 days. While full biological healing of the underlying bone socket takes several weeks, you can resume normal routines quickly. Detailed instructions are provided to avoid complications.

Dry socket occurs when the protective blood clot within the empty socket is prematurely dislodged before healing, exposing bone and causing pain around days 3–5. Prevention is simple: avoid straws, smoking, forceful spitting, and crunchy foods for the first 48 to 72 hours.

For most back and front teeth, yes. Leaving an empty gap allows neighboring teeth to drift, causes the opposing tooth to super-erupt, and triggers localized bone loss. We map out permanent replacement options with you at the time of removal.
